My Life In India

Hey all!

My name is Ursula Goik (aka Ulla) and I am doing my Bachelor of Business Administration with the specialization in Communication and Media and special focus on Global Project and Change
Management at the Windesheim Honours College in Zwolle. I am a student in the Netherlands but I was born in Poland and raised in Germany. Currently I am in Bangalore, South India! You probably ask yourself right know “What is she doing there?”.

Well, since I love challenges and I am highly ambitious to generate social change and help children and young people to get out of poverty and deprivation I decided to go to India and do my internship as an international project manager at a small NGO called Arivu Peace Child India (APCI). The organizations work focuses on improving the education of poor and low-caste children in the state of Karnataka and provides them with livelihood opportunities. APCI is basically working at Government Schools around Bangalore and a Children’s Home for Boys. The Children’s Home for Boys is a state-run home for street and working children. Boys who are picked up for working or begging on the streets are brought to this home until social workers can identify their families, if possible, and they can be reunited with them.

Boys

The Government schools APCI is working with have the sad reputation of being some of the most neglected, dilapidated schools in the country. In most Government schools, there are very few sports, library, lab or leisure equipment or facilities. Many schools do not even have a proper play area. Needless to say, as a result of this neglect, the children and teachers are unmotivated and the general educational standard in Government schools is abysmally low. APCI idea is to turn around these Government schools by improving the infrastructure, introduce new teaching methods to the students and the teachers. In order to realize their goal the organization is working together with international and national volunteers and gives them the opportunity to make a positive change while learning about the rich and versatile Indian culture. If you are interested in the field of youth empowerment and you are looking for an unforgettable experience maybe APCI’s intern programs would be exactly the right thing for you.

Summercamp

APCI is also trying to work on the children’s computer literacy. There are very few computers out here even in ‘silicon city’ and it is very difficult teaching lots of children with one computer. If you or anyone you know has an old but working laptop we would love to give it a new home. Get In touch with us via mail india@peacechild.org or check our website APCI website and Facebook page.

  1. Hi Ursula,

    Good job!

Would a Lantern device help you reaching your goals? The Lantern will receive educational stuff from the internet by satellites and can bring it all over India (and the rest of the world) in local areas where there is no good internet connection.

At Seats2meet Utrecht we can build one for you in the Permanent Future Lab.

    Best,
